Pernah tak anda mengalami situasi, fail penting terpadam secara tidak sengaja. Atau bukan fail yang dipadam tetapi folder. Fail atau folder yang terpadam itu tak boleh restore dari Recycle Bin, terpadam dengan . Atau bukan folder yang dipadam tetapi terformat thumb drive atau drive data. Atau mungkin tersilap memadam partition harddisk. Kadang kala masalah kerosakan harddisk juga boleh menyebabkan fail2 tidak lagi dapat dibaca. Mungkin juga disebabkan masalah virus komputer atau bla, bla, bla ... apa2 jer la.

Nota : Artikel ini hanya membincangkan kehilangan data secara logikal sahaja. Kehilangan data akibat kerosakan media storan secara fizikal, seperti mekanikal dan elektrikal tidak dibincangkan di sini.
Contoh:
Lebih lama fail itu terpadam dan komputer pula aktif digunakan setiap hari, maka lebih nipis peluang untuk data recovery. Tahu tak data recovery tu apa? Data recover dalam bahasa adalah pemulihan data atau mendapatkan semula data yang telah terpadam/hilang.
Anda juga perlu memahami bagaimana fail disimpan di dalam media storan. Semasa sistem operasian seperti Windows menulis data2 fail pada media storan, ia juga merekodkan lokasi serpih2an data itu (cluster) di dalam satu jadual fail utama (master file table). Master file table ini berbeza2 mengikut sistem operasian, ia mempunyai format tertentu yang dikenali sebagai file system (sistem fail).
Antara format bagi sistem fail adalah FAT (File Allocation Table), FAT32 (File Allocation Table 32 bit, sokongan nama fail yang lebih panjang dan sokongan ruang yang lebih besar), NTFS (New Technology File System), HFS dan HFS+, HPFS, UFS, ext2, ext3, ext4, btrfs, ISO 9660, Files-11, Veritas File System, VMFS, ZFS, ReiserFS dan UDF. Sesetengah sistem fail disk adalah journaling file systems atau versioning file systems. Fail sistem utama yang digunakan oleh Windows hari ini adalah FAT, FAT32 (dan variasi FAT) dan NTFS.
Sebagai contoh : katakan sebuah fail kuning disimpan di dalam harddisk, fail sistem adalah FAT32. terdapat 8 cluster bagi fail ini (0 - 7) dan kedudukan cluster ini (tertib kandungan fail, mana dulu mana kemudian) direkodkan di dalam jadual lokasi fail FAT.
Walaupun suatu fail dipadam dan tidak lagi kelihatan di dalam Windows, itu tidak bermakna fail itu hilang terus. Apabila fail dipadam, hanya penunding (pointer) kepada fail itu yang dipadam. Oleh kerana pointer fail telah dipadam, fail itu sudah tidak lagi kelihatan kepada sistem operasian. Oleh itu seluruh lokasi data fail itu di dalam ruang data harddisk tersedia kepada sistem operasian.
Jika anda tidak bernasib baik, Windows mungkin menulis data lain pada lokasi itu iaitu overwrite (tulis ganti). Jika kawasan data itu telah di overwrite, peluang anda untuk recover makin tipis. Anda mungkin dapat recover sedikit sahaja serpihan fail asal ATAU fail yang direcover adalah fail yang telah rosak dan tak berguna (corrupted file).

Jadi bagaimana untuk mendapatkan semula fail2 yang telah terpadam?
Terlebih dahulu anda mestilah faham beberapa perkara dalam data recovery ini. Proses mendapatkan semula data yang terpadam bukanlah satu proses ajaib. Peluang yang sangat cerah mungkin lebih dari 90% untuk recovery data jika fail baru terpadam dan tiada apa2 aktiviti menyimpan fail yang besar atau menyimpan sejumlah besar data pada harddisk (iaitu banyak aktiviti menulis-padam pada media storan itu). Peluang ini mungkin lebih nipis untuk ruang storan yang hampir penuh, tak cukup ruang.Lebih lama fail itu terpadam dan komputer pula aktif digunakan setiap hari, maka lebih nipis peluang untuk data recovery. Penutup
Sebelum penutup, sekali lagi diingatkan proses data recover ini bukan satu kerja ajaib. Mungkin peluang recover 50:50. Jangan pula kang bila technician gagal untuk recover fail2 yang telah setahun dipadam pada notebook office yang digunakan setiap hari, kata technician tu tak cukup hebat. Harapnya pengguna komputer dapat membezakan antara "technician" dengan "magician", ha, ha, ha ... lawak lawak. Jika hanya nama fail terpadam sahaja yang dijumpai sedangkan kandungannya lebih daripada 90% rosak, bukankah lebih baik buat semula fail itu.
